Lidl has revealed it is looking to open hundreds of new stores across the UK – including five in Southampton.

The discount supermarket chain recently published the full list of its priority locations where it would like to open shops.

This forms part of the chain’s huge expansion plans for the upcoming two to three years.

The retailer is eyeing up five new locations in Southampton, along with a handful in the surrounding area.

Here’s where Lidl would like to open stores in the city:

  • Southampton - Bassett
  • Southampton - Bitterne
  • Southampton - Netley Abbey
  • Southampton - Portswood
  • Southampton – Stoneham

Further afield:

  • Chandler's Ford
  • Fareham -North
  • Fareham - Segensworth
  • Lymington
  • Romsey

On top of the potential new sites, Lidl also wants to relocate some of its existing stores in Hampshire to other locations.

  • Southampton – Townhill

The retailer confirmed a new store target of 1,100 stores by the end of 2025, which will create 4,000 new jobs.

But Lidl says only a small number will eventually be developed and opened as stores.

Lidl GB chief development officer, Richard Taylor, said: “Our store expansion has been and continues to be unparalleled. In the last three months alone, we’ve opened 15 new stores – more than any other retailer, and in 2022 we welcomed customers through the doors of over 50 new stores.

“But we won’t be stopping there. Our vision is to have over 1,100 stores in the future, but really there’s no ceiling on our ambition or growth potential.

“What’s important is that we take a strategic and sustainable approach to getting there.”
