A BRAND new production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will open at Mayflower Theatre in 2024.

The beloved musical, which has visited Southampton on two previous occasions to much critical and audience acclaim, will head out on tour around the UK after a two-week stop in the city next spring.

Based on Ian Fleming’s timeless story for children which was later made into the celebrated 1968 film, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang features the unforgettable songs by the Sherman Brothers including Toot Sweets, Hushabye Mountain, Truly Scrumptious and the Academy Award-nominated title song, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

This new production will be directed by Mayflower Theatre’s multi award-winning Artistic Director Thom Southerland (Titanic, Parade), and choreographed by Karen Bruce of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing and The Bodyguard fame.

In Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, we meet absent-minded inventor Caractacus Potts who restores a broken-down old racing car with the help of his children Jemima and Jeremy. Soon the family discover the car has magical powers, and along with the delectable Truly Scrumptious, the family end up on a hilarious fantastical adventure to far-off lands.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, dubbed the world's most fantasmagorical musical, will run from Tuesday April 30 to Sunday May 12 next year and tickets will go on general sale later this month.

Jason Manford, Martin Kemp, Michelle Collins and Phill Jupitus starred when Chitty Chitty Bang Bang last hit the Mayflower stage, back in 2016.

A previous 2007 production saw Craig McLachlan appear as Caractacus Potts and Alvin Stardust as The Child Catcher.
