A TEACHING assistant is set to retire from Oakfield Academy after working 35 years at the Totton primary school.

Linda Bundy, 70, first joined the school in 1988 to help out during lunchtime before becoming an early years teaching assistant in 1992.

In the 35 years since she joined, Linda’s two children and three grandchildren have all walked through the school gates.

She told the Daily Echo: “I am passionate about early year teaching, that’s been my career since I finished training in 1973!

“I was a nursery nurse when I first started but my training was perfect for the work I do at the school.

“I’ve worked under many different headteachers, and I’ve loved it… because I’m still here! I turned 70 in April, and I thought ‘I have to make a decision’ while I’m still fit and healthy. But I’ll put my name on the volunteer list, so I will still have those connections.

“I’ve gone five years past my retirement age so I think that shows I’ve loved it and I do feel I could carry on, but I felt I had to make a decision.”

In a touching tribute, headteacher of Oakfield Academy, Haydn Mitton said: “Linda’s devotion to our children, staff, and community, along with her resilience amidst all the changes the school has undergone, is nothing short of inspiring. She has been a constant presence for many, and pupils both past and present will miss her daily.

“Throughout the years, Linda has been an integral part of the school's transformation, seamlessly adapting to technological advancements and shifts in teaching methodologies.

“Transitioning from chalkboards to smartboards and textbooks to tablets, Linda has skilfully bridged the gap between traditional and modern approaches, always prioritising what is best for the children in her care.”

Due to retire from work on July 21, Linda added: “I’ve got tons and tons of memories, going through anniversaries for the school. It’s difficult to pick any standout memories but I’ll miss my colleagues and the social side of things.

“Obviously, we’ll still keep in touch – but also the children, I’ll miss the children as I just love being around them.”
