THEY'RE the UK's premier Shrek tribute band - and they're unleashing themselves on audiences in Hampshire tonight.

The Ogretones are to make their debut at The Railway Inn in Winchester with a set entirely made up of songs from the soundtracks of the celebrated CGI animations starring a loveable ogre in a fairy tale land.

The eight piece band, who hail from Southampton and Petersfield, are to perform dressed as characters from the smash hit Dreamworks films.

The idea is the brainchild of Shrek fan Andrew Pennick, one of the lead singers in the band, who performs as the titular character, complete with green guitar, alongside his Princess Fiona.

He noticed a trend in previous bands that all the biggest hits were taken from the Shrek soundtracks.

Andrew, 31, told the Daily Echo: "I've been in various bands over the years and it started to become obvious to me that a huge number of the most popular party tracks were from the Shrek soundtracks.

"I thought back to my childhood and spoke to other people of similar ages and older and younger - Shrek definitely has universal appeal I think - and I had the greatest idea for a new band!

"It went down so well with everyone and once I knew the idea was worth doing, I started advertising and talking to friends of friends. We ran possibly the most ridiculous auditions of all time and came up with a cracking band of excellent musicians.

"We've been producing our showreel and gearing up for the first gig. Then the plan is to conquer the world!

"If anyone has a venue that needs a band to play, or has a birthday party or corporate function coming up, get in touch."

The Ogretones are made up of vocals, bass, keys and drums, as well as a three piece brass section.

Expect hits from the likes of Smash Mouth, Counting Crows, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Bonnie Tyler and more, fresh from the rehearsal swamps of Hampshire.

Support at The Railway comes from five-piece indie rock outfit Aztec Flowers.
