IN the wake of Seawork Cardboard Boat Regatta, the Echo looks back at pictures of Hamble Raft Race from more than 35 years ago.

The Horse and Jockey pub in Curdridge saw a tremendous gathering on September 21, 1986 when around 30 crews hauled themselves up the river for three miles from Upper Hamble Country Park.

Hundreds filled the stretch to cheer on the paddlers - some taking it quite seriously, others in amusing fancy dress.

Botley fire brigade used their raft “Fire Fish,” and Mermaid Yard showcased its new design “Barrelcuda.”

Eastleigh Mayor June Sanders began the race happily noting that such a turnout would certainly bolster the funds of the mentioned appeal. She remarked: “I think it’s marvellous that so much interest has been taken in it!”
