A YOUNG Hampshire humanitarian's latest adventure has taken her from the epicentre of the Turkish earthquake relief effort to The Houses of Parliament.

Activist Maya Cheesman, 12, took action to help those impacted by a huge earthquake which killed tens of thousands of people, after seeing devastating news reports from her homeland five months ago.

The Year 8 pupil at St Swithun's School in Winchester raised more than £1,000 and travelled to south-eastern Turkey, near the border with Syria, to team up with a relief organisation to deliver aid to those in need.

Following her incredible relief efforts, Maya, from Cheriton, was invited to Westminster by her local MP Flick Drummond.

She was given a peronsal tour inside one of the world's most famous buildings, enjoyed debates and saw British democracy in action.

The fundraising included selling Turkish-style bracelets to fellow students and staff members to raise vital donations for the cause.

Maya then personally delivered much-needed items when she flew out with her mum Eda to help in person during the Easter break from school.

They donated blankets, tents, food, and other supplies to the earthquake zone where millions of people were displaced with their homes destroyed.

The journey covered over 1400km during a two day drive, with the latter part of the journey crossing the mountains into the disaster zone.

Maya said: "I believe that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference in the world. It’s important to show people they are not alone, and we are here to support them."

She worked with TAYFA, a community volunteer group working to deliver aid.

Following the Houses of Parliament visit, dad Daren added: "The highlight of Maya's visit was the opportunity to engage in thought-provoking conversations with Flick and to talk about the issues close to her heart.

"This first-hand interaction with one of the women who shape national policies, left Maya inspired and filled her with a renewed sense of civic duty, igniting a spark of ambition to contribute to society in her own way."
