BERYL Bikes are set to land at 26 new locations across Southampton.

Breeze has expanded the Beryl Bikes scheme in a bid to make it easier for city residents to have acess to a rental bike.

The rentable bike scheme was introduced in hopes of creating a greener, healthier city.

Now, commuters will have a chance to rent one of 380 bikes at around 150 bays across the city by the end of the summer.

People will now be able to ride to and from even more locations across Southampton on pedal or electric bikes.

Councillor Eamonn Keogh, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport said: “This expansion means so much for our city and getting around with ease on either a push bike or e-bike.

"With another 26 bike bays operational, you’ll be closer than you think to your next sustainable journey.”

The bikes were already available at 42 bays, but people can now hire one at a further 26 bays, through the Breeze app developed by Southampton City Council in partnership with Solent Transport, or using the Beryl app.

Councillor Phil Jordan, Deputy Chair of Solent Transport’s Joint Committee said: “As councillors across Portsmouth, Southampton and the Isle of Wight, we are rightfully proud of how the Solent Transport partnership of local authorities is delivering sustainable transport options for residents and visitors.

"The expansion of Beryl Bikes by Breeze makes it even easier for people to choose to travel on a cleaner and greener vehicle that reduces congestion on our road network.”

Phil Ellis, CEO of Beryl said the move was "great news".

“The schemes have already had a significant impact on decarbonising the region’s transport network, preventing more than four tonnes of harmful carbon emissions and replacing almost 9000 car, van, taxi or motorbike journeys across Portsmouth, Southampton and the Isle of Wight," he added.

“Our vehicles are fun, easy to use and cost-effective when compared to private vehicle ownership, removing the costs of fuel, tax, MOT, storage, insurance and maintenance, so why not give them a go this summer.”
