One of the city's biggest festivals has been cancelled after a yellow weather warning was issued for Southampton.

Southampton Mela usually welcomes thousands of people every year to Hoglands Park but will not go ahead on Saturday.

The festival organisers made the announcement on social media.

On Facebook, organisers said: "It is with deep regret that we announce the cancellation of tomorrow’s Southampton Mela Festival on Saturday, July 15.

"The decision has been made by Art Asia’s Board of Trustees and the production team due to significant concerns regarding health and safety, stemming from the severe weather warnings for tomorrow.

"In order to accommodate those who were scheduled to perform or trade at the festival and are currently en route to the region, we have made the proactive choice to cancel the event today.

"Despite careful consideration from various perspectives, including extensive preparations over several months, we have come to the conclusion that proceeding with the festival would be untenable.

"According to the Met Office, the wind speeds predicted for tomorrow have escalated to a level that poses a direct threat to life and property. In light of this, prioritising the safety of our community, artists, and traders is of paramount importance.

"Therefore, with sincere regret, we must inform you that the Southampton Mela Festival 2023 will not proceed as planned. However, we eagerly anticipate the opportunity to welcome everyone back for our return in 2024."

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Southampton and other parts of Hampshire over the weekend.

The city will be hit by "unseasonably" high winds that are predicted to reach highs of 50mph.

There will also likely be delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges, with damage to trees or temporary structures such as tents or marquees likely to occur.
