When the city council opted to draw down on some of its reserves rather than reduce the cost of its senior management it was feared that those who rely on social care would face the brunt of subsequent reductions.

Now Councillor Lorna Fielker, a Labour Cabinet member, suggests that social care could be cut to the tune of one day per week per vulnerable person.

Anyone familiar with CAMHS or adult services knows they are already overwhelmed so cuts to care will, literally, be life-taking.

Every parliamentary candidate for Southampton Test and Itchen should condemn this possible raid on the frailest members of our city.

The ruling Labour group ought in turn to be encouraged to think again. Urgently.
