A man has been charged in connection with an attack on Hong Kong protestors in Southampton.

Officers investigating a hate-related assault in the Southampton area have charged Zheng Gong with racially aggravated assault.

The 23-year-old of High Street, Southampton has been remanded and is due to appear at Southampton Magistrates’ Court today.

The charges come after it is alleged that a group of people were confronted and assaulted on Burgess Road in Southampton at around 4.25pm on Sunday, June 11.

The incident happened after a protest was held in the city centre to show support for Hong Kong political prisoners being held by the Chinese government.

A video of the attack went viral on Twitter, amassing over 1.5 million views.
