WITH the New Forest Show beginning this weekend, the Echo looks back at the event in 1989.

On July 25, 1989, those visiting the showground were lucky enough to experience an incredibly sunny day with temperatures reaching a sweltering 30C. The weather couldn't have been better for the event.

A true engineering marvel, Bill Carter's Jaguar V12 rocket car made its presence known at the exhibition. It boasted an electrifying top speed of 150mph and had been registered as a road-legal vehicle by Mr Carter himself, who would often use it to travel to his job at the Ordnance Survey in Southampton.

When Liz and Marie Edgar, two internationally renowned riders, spoke to the Echo about how great the show was, they were full of praise.

To get a trophy in such an outstanding competition would require their best performance.

“This is one of the best and nicest shows and standards are always very high. But we always enjoy ourselves,” said Liz.

In pursuit of a British record, Mike Smith, of Christchurch, set out on a daring quest. His goal was to ascend and descend a 75-ft tree trunk in less than 60 seconds.
