TRAIN passengers are repeatedly hit by delayed services at Southampton Central.

Southampton Central station ranks 1,782 for the timeliness of services out of all 2,616 stations across Britain.

This is according to On Time Trains, which monitors performance of individual stations.

Two customers, Peter Fox, 45, and his father Connor, 85, were yesterday travelling to Southampton Central for the first time to catch a ferry.

But they saw their journey hindered by delayed services.

Peter, who is self-employed, said: "It was our first trip to Southampton and the train was delayed by eleven minutes."

Performance is measured by the percentage of trains that are on time per day.

Smaller stations in and around Southampton are higher ranked in the list - Millbrook at 1,044, St Denys at 1,336, Woolston at 1,550 and Bitterne at 1,098.

Southampton Central is the 58th busiest station in Great Britain, with entries increasing from 11,766 per day in 2022 to more than 14,000 in 2023.

Between 5pm and 6pm each day 58 per cent of services are delayed or disrupted on average, according to the website.

Even during the best performing period - between 6am and 7am - some 23 per cent of services are hit by delays.

Comparing Southampton Central to the busiest stations in some of Britain's major cities, it also ranks poorly.

London Waterloo is the busiest station in the country. It ranks 513 in terms of delayed trains.

Edinburgh station is the 18th busiest in Britain and also ranks above Southampton Central at 1,013. Liverpool Central is the 24th busiest and ranks 582.

Birmingham New Street and Manchester Piccadilly both rank in the top 15 busiest train stations but are both ranked lower than Southampton Central at 2,158 and 2,168 respectively.

There are rail strikes scheduled for Saturday affecting Cross Country services.

Passengers are entitled to compensation if their trains are delayed by 15 minutes or more via the Delay Repay scheme.

Any claims must be made to the service operator.
