PEOPLE working near where a man was stabbed in the city centre have reacted with shock.

A 34-year-old man was stabbed in Wyndham Place, opposite Southampton Central railway station, on Friday morning.

Police were called at 8.30am. The victim was taken to hospital with a stab wound, where he remains in a “serious but stable condition.”

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: “We were called at 8.30am (on Friday), September 8, to Wyndham Place to reports of a 34-year-old man with a stab wound.

“He has been taken to hospital for treatment, he is in a serious but stable condition, having sustained an injury to the right collarbone area.

“Officers are in the area conducting enquiries and would ask that anyone with information phone us on 101 with reference 0417 of today’s (Friday’s) date.”

Hampshire police confirmed that armed officers were deployed to the scene “due to the nature of the incident” – but were not there in an armed capacity.

Crew members from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance were also deployed to the scene, where two doctors and a paramedic from the critical care team treated the victim before he was taken to hospital.

Members of the public who work near incident told the Echo of their ‘shock’ that such a crime could take place on their doorstep.

One man noticed five police cars nearby while he was at work.

He said: “I was shocked as I work in the area, it’s not what you really expect, and obviously I was concerned for the victim.

A 25-year-old man, who works on Wyndham Place, added: “We don’t really know what happened, to be honest.

“We opened at 10am and seemed to miss most of what happened, but there was a police cordon on the other side of the road and a few police cars around.

“Now the police cars appear to have gone away and it’s business as usual.”

By 1.30pm, five hours after the incident only one police van remained near the scene, parked outside Norwich House.
