A busy junction will close for six weeks as works to improve safety get underway.

The Cranbury Road and Station Road junction in Southampton will be closed from October 2.

The closure forms part of the Eastern Quietway scheme, which aims to reduce traffic and improve the area for pedestrians and cyclists.

The work is expected to take approximately six weeks to complete.

Working hours will be between 7am and 5.30pm on weekdays, but restrictions will be in place throughout the installation.

Here’s what you need to know

Phase one

Daily Echo:

A new zebra crossing will be added on Station Road to improve pedestrian access to and from Sholing rail station, as well as a new pedestrian island at the junction of Cranbury Road and Station Road.

The vehicle exit from Cranbury Road to Station Road will change to left turn only, which will ‘improve safety and make it easier’ to cross Cranbury Road.

The junction will be closed for the duration of the works with diversion routes in place for access to Station Road.

Pedestrian access will be maintained either using the southern footway or temporary footways on the northern side.

Access to Sholing rail station will always be maintained.

For safety, temporary two-way traffic lights will be on Station Road between Spring Road and Porchester Road to guide traffic around the closure area.

Phase two

There will be an additional closure at the junction of Porchester Road and Station Road for works on the existing island.

A diversion route will be in place for traffic using Portsmouth Road to access Station Road.

The dates for these works will be advertised on yellow ‘advanced warning’ signs in the area, and work will take approximately seven days.

Phase one restrictions will continue during this time.

Phase three

Towards the end of the works, a full closure will be in place on Station Road between Portsmouth Road and Spring Road as well as the Cranbury Road junction.

This is so the section can be resurfaced. The dates for these works will be advertised on yellow ‘advanced warning’ signs in the area, and working hours will be between 8pm and 6am to minimise disruption.
