A woman in her 80s was hit by a car while crossing the road in Fareham.

The victim was crossing Gosport Road near the roundabout with Old Gosport Road just after 9.30pm yesterday. She suffered serious injuries.

It is alleged the driver, a 53-year-old man from Locks Heath, did not stop.

He was arrested on suspicion of aiding or abetting the causing of serious injury by dangerous driving and being the driver of a vehicle failing to stop after a road accident.

Inspector Matt Moss issued a statement on Fareham Police's Facebook page amid speculation that someone had died.

He said: “Despite speculation I have already seen on social media, no one has lost their life as a result of this incident, although injuries have been sustained and are serious.

“If you are one of the people who has posted on a local social media site suggesting someone has died as a result of this, please consider editing or removing your posts out of respect for the family and friends of those involved in this matter.”

Police are now looking to speak to anyone with information to assist their enquiries.
