A statement from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "An electrical fault is believed to be the cause of a Southampton pub fire.

"Crews from St Mary’s, Redbridge and Hightown were alerted shortly after 3am to the incident at the pub in Town Quay.

"Upon arrival firefighters found smoke and flames issuing from the building.

"The firefighters donned breathing apparatus sets before extinguishing the blaze using hose reel jets.

"HIWFRS cleared smoke from the premises using ventilation fans before the incident was handed back to the landlord.

"Crews left the scene and returned to station at around half four following the stop message."

The pub’s history dates back to 1873 and is of historical interest as it was built against the old town wall, built around 1350.

The pub featured in the James Cameron movie, Titanic.

Back in 1912, the tavern would have looked directly out across the brand-new city docks, with a clear view of the Titanic.
