Kai Widdrington is back on our screens as a Strictly Come Dancing professional – this year with a broadcasting legend by his side.

The professional dancer from Chandler’s Ford has taken to the iconic dancefloor with journalist Angela Rippon.

The pair have wowed audiences with their dances, including a scintillating Argentine Tango and comedic Charleston, just to name a few.

But with Kai in his third series of the hit BBC reality show, what is it that he’s enjoying most?

Certainly not the lederhosen he wore for the pair’s performance in Movie Week.

He quickly clarified they were not from his personal wardrobe.

Kai told the Echo: “Well, I can absolutely categorically say that I own nothing of the sort.

“I think when I learned to dance as a kid, I never thought I'd be dancing in lederhosen in front of the nation with Angela Rippon with a blonde wig on.”

On a more serious note, Kai said he’s ‘loving every second’ dancing with Angela.

‘It's endless amounts of positivity every single day in the rehearsal room’, he said.

Despite their 50-year age gap, Kai said it feels like they have known each other for 50 years.

He added: “To be honest, it's just an absolute delight and a pleasure to be with her every day.

“We're really, really good mates.”

The pair tackle a waltz on Saturday night and Kai hopes to bring it back to basics.

He explained: “We’ve done the Rumba and Argentine Tango which are very dramatic, and last week was crazy fun.

“This week we’re doing a beautiful waltz.”

Speaking on the dance, Angela, 79, said there is a lot more than meets the eye when it comes to the waltz.

She said: “A waltz, when it's done beautifully and professionally, just glides around a dance floor, like a swan glides on the top of a lake, but the feet are paddling like fury underneath.

“I’m loving the waltz because it is a beautiful dance and Kai has come up with some lovely choreography.

“I trust Kai implicitly in what he asks me to do.

“He's a wonderful, wonderful partner to have. He dances beautifully and he partners beautifully.”

Kai will be returning to his roots next year with partner and fellow Strictly professional Nadiya Bychkova.

The pair will debut on the Mayflower Theatre stage on June 30 – the final show of their tour.

Kai said: “I can't quite believe that I'm going to be closing my own tour in the Mayflower in Southampton.

“To have our own show, our closing night of the tour, there is really, really special.

“I'm very excited to perform in front of the people of Southampton.”
