A Southampton pub on the banks of the River Itchen has been left devastated by flooding despite efforts to protect the popular venue.

The pub was hit when 37.8mm of rain fell on Thursday amid flood warnings issued by the Environment Agency.

Despite the staff’s best efforts to protect The White Swan, water breached the building - ruining the pub's carpet and furniture.

On Friday morning the car park in Mansbridge Road was submerged with the water levels reaching knee height.

Staff said: “We are sorry to announce that even though we tried our best to protect our pub, the business suffered quite badly in the flood overnight and we will remain closed.

“We are unable to contact any bookings as we have lost our phone lines, internet connection along with hot water. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Meanwhile, residents in Thornhill woke up to parts of Hinkler Road underwater with a van having to be towed from the scene.

A lane closure on Millbrook Road West was eventually lifted on Friday but one in Southern Road  remains in place.

Thomas Lewis Way was also closed but it reopened in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, Thornhill resident of 17 years, Will Sogs said the flooding on Hinkler Road was the worst he remembers seeing on the road.

The 52-year-old said: “I’ve never seen it flooded like this and I have lived here for 17 years.

“I saw a post on Facebook and got down here. I normally take this cut way and it flooded all the way up so I couldn’t even get through. It’s cleared now, fortunately.

“I thought it would have gone by now but it’s all still flooded.”

The stretch of road between Marston Road and Warburton Road was closed for most of the day on Friday - but reopened later that day.

He added the closure would cause headaches to those who rely on a bus to get about.
