A Shirley father-of-two saw his driveway fill up with floating faeces after torrential rain earlier this week led to sewage spilling from a drain.

Tomasz Zacharkiewicz, 38, first reported sewage flooding his garden back in October when Southern Water was carrying out works in nearby Winchester Road.

But after the city was battered by heavy downpours on Thursday, leading to flash flooding in several areas, faeces poured again onto his drive in Norham Avenue with an unpleasant smell filling the air.

“I thought that when Southern Water left Winchester Road, that would be the end of it,” said Tomasz.

The car dealer added: “It is such and nightmare and it feels hopeless now.

“My children can’t play outside, use their bikes or jump on their trampoline. I can’t even let the cats go out of the back door because there is a river of sewage outside.

“Not only do we have to worry about getting flooded and walking someone’s faeces into my carpet, but I am also in fear every time I see rain forecast.

“It is affecting my family’s wellbeing – I spend the last two weekends cleaning out the garage – when it is now full of sewage.”

Southern Water says all customers should call its customer line to report flooding issues.

But Tomasz says he hasn't been able to get through for days.

A spokesperson for the company said: “Our team visited Mr Zacharkiewicz last, in early November 2023.

“They investigated and checked the manhole and surrounding manholes for blockages, all of which were clear and flowing.

“A goodwill gesture was accepted by the customer for the inconvenience caused.

“Our customers are advised to call our customer line on 0330 303 0368 to report any flooding issues that we can help with.”
