Southampton was littered with snow flurries on this afternoon - with more set to come.

A cold snap overnight saw temperatures in the city as low as 2C with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning throughout the day for ice.

Though snow eluded Southampton much of Monday morning, the afternoon saw a smattering of light snow showers - with more set to come between 6pm and 8pm tonight.

Commenting on social media, residents were quick to share videos and pictures of the snowflakes falling from the sky.

Amanda Blaxhill commented: “It’s a flurry, I hoped we’d have got more but I can’t help but feel this is all we’re going to get.”

Amanda Lewis also spotted the snow, adding: “Nowhere near enough to settle, never mind.”

However, there were other locals who were more sceptical at the sight of snow laying in Southampton, as Sara-Jayne Fuller said: “I’ve seen more dusting on a Victoria Sponge!”

While Scott Lendon noted: “It was a little bit of sleet, what’s next?

“It is Southampton, if the snow comes down heavy or lays it’s a miracle.”

Though the snow might have disappointed some, Southampton City Council offered some advice to residents.

They said: “Temperatures are predicted to drop below zero overnight in Southampton, so our gritters will be out pre-treating priority routes for ice from early this afternoon (Monday, January 8).

“We have crews on standby to treat priority routes any time the temperature drops and we have teams ready to respond 24/7 to the worst of the winter weather.

“Whether you’re walking, wheeling, or driving, please stay safe out on the roads and take advantage of our bus offers for a warmer trip.”

Motorists in the New Forest were also urged to take ‘extra care’ – but not for the reasons you may think.

Posting on social media, the New Forest National Park Authority said: "With the temperatures dropping, salt will be spread on the main roads in the Forest to make them safe.

"However, this can attract free-roaming animals like ponies and donkeys.”

They continued: “Salt licks are being placed away from these routes by the Real New Forest - CDA (Commoners' Defence Association), but these are not guaranteed to keep animals away from the roads.”
