Trans Pride Southampton are to mark the first anniversary of Brianna Ghey’s murder.

On February 11, 2023, 16-year-old transgender girl Brianna died after being stabbed in Culcheth Linear Park, near Warrington.

Two 15-year-olds – Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe – were convicted of her murder and sentenced to a combined 42 years in prison.

On Sunday, February 11, Trans Pride Southampton and the Art House will be co-hosting a night to pay tribute to Brianna Ghey, as well as allowing the trans community to come together.

A spokesperson for the group said: "We hope this will tackle isolation and help people to collectively heal and help each other in this difficult time."

Children in court cases normally cannot be named - but due to the severity of their crimes, a judge waived Jenkinson and Ratcliffe's right to anonymity.

They said: "With the names being released and the large media attention once more, a lot of trans people and our allies are feeling pain and complex emotions."

The spokesperson added that a lot of trans people, many of whom may be further marginalised due to other factors including race, 'struggle with being isolated'.

"So, we hope this event can help these people with other trans members of the community and our allies," they said.

The event will be at The Art House on Above Bar Street from 5pm to 9pm.

Refreshments including teas, coffees, and cake will be available.

Daily Echo: Last year People’s Pride Southampton held a candle-lit vigil for Brianna Ghey at East Park, in the days following her murder.

Hundreds of people gathered to pay their respects.

At the time, event organiser Mabel Wellman said: “It’s meant a lot for everyone, we practically have been able to light up part of the entire park just by candles by the number of people who have turned up.

“It just shows our strength and our resilience in these times."

Appealing across politics to come together and support trans rights, she added: “We need both sides to say that our rights are not questionable, are not up for debates, and every attempt to not include the gender we identify should be treated very harshly and punished.”
