Two migrants were found in the luggage hold of a coach carrying children at the end of a school trip - but the Home Office won't say if they were detained.

Parents were left shocked after the two men, thought to be in their early 20s, were found among the luggage when the coach arrived at Hounsdown School in Totton on Saturday.

Police said they attended the incident, but no arrests were made.

A Home Office spokesperson declined to confirm whether the two men were detained.

However, she said the department works closely with law enforcement agencies to tackle illegal migration in all its forms.

Here is what we know so far.

Luggage covered in urine

The coach had Year 9 and 10 pupils, who had just come back from a three-day school trip visiting Boulogne University about 20 miles south of Calais.

Teachers and pupils had travelled home on the coach via the Eurotunnel at Calais and returned to Totton on Saturday evening around 5pm.

However, when they arrived and the luggage hold doors were open they came face to face with the two men.

One of them tried to run off but was stopped by gathered parents.

"It was horrendous," one mum who was waiting for her 14-year-old son told the Echo.

Describing the moment the men were found, she said: "[My son's] luggage was covered in urine and his belongings crumpled by one of the men being on top of it!"

She added: "I asked them (in French) if they spoke English or French and they replied French, I was about to ask them where they’d come from but got ushered away by the teachers."

She said her only thought was to grab her son’s baggage from the coach and leave.

"I just said 'excusez moi' to the gent and leaned over him to get the rest of the bags out as my son's was tucked underneath him."

No arrests made

Police officers were called to the scene just before 5.15pm to what they described as two ‘possible illegal immigrants'.

Hampshire Police confirmed they attended but no arrests were made.

A Home Office spokesperson did not confirm whether the two men had been detained, adding: “The Government works closely with law enforcement agencies to tackle illegal migration in all its forms.

“Our Illegal Migration Act will mean that people arriving in the UK illegally are detained and promptly removed to their country of origin or a safe third country.”
