Plans for 84 new homes to be built on a school’s former playing field have attracted a wave of opposition.

The proposals tabled by Sovereign Network Group would see the homes built on the land to the rear of the former St Mary's Independent School in Midanbury Lane, Southampton.

The land is described in the plans as ‘low quality and not publicly accessible’; however residents have said it will ‘threaten’ wildlife in the area.

The scheme would include eight one-bed apartments, 24 two-bed apartments and 27 two-bed houses, as well as 22 three-bed houses and three four-bed houses.

While a decision is due to be made by planning panel councillors, residents are urging the leaders to scrap the plans.

One resident is concerned about how traffic would be impacted in the area.

They said: “The extra traffic will gridlock the surrounding roads, increasing the poor air pollution along the roads young children walk daily to and from school.

“At the junction of Beech Avenue and Juniper Road, large vans and lorries have to mount the pavement to get around due to parked cars. I strongly object to this development.”

Meanwhile, others worry about the impact on wildlife, with one saying: "The loss of habitat for a great deal of wildlife is also very worrying.

"Badgers, foxes, bats and a great deal of other wildlife are known to live on the site. These will all be threatened or displaced if the land is developed."

Another resident opposed the plans citing fears that the overcrowding of properties could lead to an impact on their quality of life.

They said: “Overcrowding can lead to noise pollution, lack of privacy, and a general feeling of being cramped. This can negatively impact the quality of life of residents and lead to increased stress and anxiety.”

Neighbours also raised concerns about the impact it would have on their properties.

One said: “The trees that currently screen the view into my property are to be removed. This will negatively impact on my privacy and my right to enjoy my property. The road is far too close and should be screened by existing mature trees.”
