A Southampton FC football match hangs in the balance following a nearby warehouse fire.

The blaze, reported shortly after 1pm yesterday, ripped through a warehouse opposite St Mary’s Stadium.

Last night’s planned match against Preston North End FC was postponed as a result.

Saints are set to play Sunderland at home on Saturday but could face another postponement.

There will be an assessment of any smoke damage to the stadium in the coming days ahead of hosting Sunderland on Saturday.

Fans have taken to Twitter to ask the club if Saturday's match will be going ahead.

In one response, @JoeWills13 said: "It basically has to be because I don’t want 2 home games in a row postponed which would be tragedy striking the club."

The extent of the damage to the stadium and the anticipated presence of emergency services in the area is not known.

They could play their final 10 games in the space of only 36 days.

Several roads near St Mary’s Stadium remain closed today as a result.
