The pregnant fiancée of a man seriously injured in a horrific motorcycle crash has recalled the moment he called her while pinned under his bike.

John Young was involved in a serious crash while riding his Lexmoto motorbike on Tuesday.

The collision involving a silver Vauxhall Corsa happened around 1pm on Acacia Road, at the junction with Cypress Avenue.

The commercial binman was rushed to Southampton General Hospital where he remains at the current time.

Zara Dunne, who has a nine-month-old baby boy with him and is also 17 weeks pregnant with their second child, has spoken about the moment her fiancée of two years called her.

Speaking to the Echo, she said: “He called me to say he had been in an accident. I didn’t know what to do so I just phoned his parents and one of them came to pick me up with my baby while the other went to meet John.

“I was just shocked and panicking. I needed to get to him but the baby was asleep and had no way of getting up there, so I called my mum as she is only five minutes away.”

Following the crash, neighbours nearby rushed to John’s side, who was blacking out, as they waited for help to arrive.

Zara, from Woolston, said: “They were making sure he was conscious and tried to make him as calm as possible. He was on the floor with his bike over him and kept going in and out of consciousness.”

She said: “We are still trying to process things. He’s still in shock at the moment, he’s still processing what happened to him.

“He won’t be returning to work for a long while. He possibly won’t ever be getting back to work.

"We just don’t know, it depends on how he recovers.”

Zara said she is grateful for the immediate help from residents, saying: “I just want to say a massive thank you to them, their actions helped to save his life. It could have turned out so much worse.”

If that wasn’t enough, residents have now set up a fundraiser to help the full-time mum cope with the costs, which has so far raised £205 out of the £5,000 goal.

Speaking of the moment she found out about the fundraiser, she said: “I was just shocked, I am really grateful for it.

“It will really help me to get everything sorted when it comes to finances. I imagine there will be a lot of expenses once John gets out.”

Police have said investigations are ongoing and no arrests have been made at this stage. They urge any one who was in the area who may have relevant CCTV to come forward.

A spokesperson said: "We would like to speak to anyone in the area with relevant CCTV, dash cam or doorbell footage, as well as any witnesses to the collision or the moments leading up to it.

"Anyone with information should call 101 or report online via our website, quoting reference 44240096003."
