The Bargate Quarter scheme is set to be finished and ready for people to move in by 2026 after work restarted at the stalled construction site.

Cranes were seen moving for the first time in eight months after main contractor Henry Construction Projects went into administration in June last year.

Construction had started at the site in February 2022, with the £132m development set to consist of 519 new homes and 2,515 square metres of commercial space.

It’s now understood that health and safety checks are being completed on the site before work resumes in the summer.

In a statement, a spokesperson for development funder Legal and General told the Echo: “Bargate Quarter represents an exciting and important development project within the city of Southampton.

“L&G remain fully committed to this project and the efficient delivery of these much-needed homes.

“We suffered delays following the construction company going into administration, but we are intending to restart work on site in the summer.”

They added: “We look forward to welcoming new residents in early 2026.”

Work on the development was forced to a halt after Henry Construction Projects was fined £234,000 – forcing them into administration.

This came after an incident in 2021 in which a demolition worker fell from a platform and was seriously injured at a separate construction site in London.

Commenting on the resumption of the works, leader of Southampton City Council, Lorna Fielker, said: “This is excellent news for stakeholders in the city centre and the city as a whole as we can again look forward to the completion of this outstanding project.

“With new commercial space, much-needed new homes and a new linear park to showcase the historic town walls and bring new life to these amazing heritage assets, the delivery of the Bargate Quarter will reinvigorate this area.”
