Southampton Football Club manager Russell Martin has praised the work of the emergency services following a fire at a warehouse outside St Mary’s Stadium.

Firefighters tackled a blaze at Polystar Plastics’ industrial unit, Marine Parade, on Wednesday afternoon, with as many as 18 fire engines pouring water onto the flames throughout the night and into the next morning.

In his pre-match programme address before Southampton take on Sunderland in a Championship fixture at 3pm this afternoon, Saints boss Russell Martin praised the efforts of the emergency services during the ‘scary’ ordeal.

He said: “It was quite scary to see some of the pictures and videos of the fire that forced the club to postpone Wednesday’s game against Preston, which was definitely the right decision.”

He added: “The emergency services did an amazing job, working all through the day and night, and I just hope everyone is safe.”

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service in turn praised the club for its support during the fire.

They posted on X: "A big thank you to @SouthamptonFC  who have been amazing in supporting our teams during the nearby industrial fire.

"By looking after our people and allowing us to use parts of their site, they have helped us tackle the fire and protect the community."
