A man was left with serious injuries after falling out of his car and being hit in the face by his own car door as the vehicle plunged off the road.

CCTV footage shows the dramatic moment the driver fell out of the silver Audi which was careering backwards out of control, before ending up in a grass verge in Sholing.

In the footage, the man can be seen to tumble out of the Audi A8 as it heads backwards towards a yellow grit box, before the door is bent backwards and smacks the stricken driver.

A woman who has been on the pavement then goes over the assist.

The car is eventually stopped from going any further by a metal barrier on a footpath that had been busy with children on their way to school only minutes earlier.

The extraordinary scenes took place just before 9am on Thursday in Furze Close, Sholing, and Hampshire Police confirmed that the man, aged in his 60s, suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.

It is understood that the man was taken to hospital.

The crash left a trail of destruction behind with the yellow box torn and the tyre marks still visible on the grass.

The metal barriers on the cutaway also showed considerable damage from when the car smashed against it.

A neighbour nearby who heard what happened, who asked not to be named said: “I was at home this morning and I heard a big bang, and I thought it came from upstairs’ neighbours.

“I didn’t think too much of it, it was only when I heard a commotion coming from outside that drew my attention.

“When I saw what happened I thought to check the CCTV and that’s when I saw the crash.”

When she saw the collision in the footage, the woman realised how strange the incident was, saying: “It was really weird how he just reversed with that speed.

“I took my automatic driving license many moons ago and I don’t understand how he just reversed that quickly.

“It’s really bizarre, I don’t understand what he was doing and how he got the car like that.”

She added: “This was only a short time after children and parents had gone through the cutaway on their way to school so it could have been much worse.”
