Well wishes have been sent to Catherine, Princess of Wales in Southampton after she announced she was undergoing treatment for cancer.

Revealing her diagnosis in an emotional video message, the Princess said: “I am well and getting stronger every day.”

The future Queen began a course of “preventative chemotherapy” late in February but is said to have a positive mindset for her recovery and is in good spirits, describing herself as “well and getting stronger every day”.

She added: “In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous.”

Leading well wishes to the Princess, Southampton Itchen MP, Royston Smith said: “We often forget that our Royals are a family, just like our own. I can only imagine how worrying it is for the Princess of Wales and the Prince.

“But also their three young children, the King, who is undergoing his own cancer treatment, and the Queen.

“My thoughts are with Princess Catherine and all the Royal Family and I hope she has a quick and full recovery.”

Last June, the Princess visited Southampton as she opened the groundbreaking new facility Hope Street, to support women in the justice system.

She stayed in the city for just over an hour, enjoying a tour of the facility led by Edwina Grosvenor, the founder of the charity, One Small Thing.

In a handwritten message hung to a Messages of Hope tree, the Princess said: “I see you and I am with you. Good luck in all that lies ahead. Catherine."

She previously spent time in Southampton in 2001 before going off to St Andrew’s University when she helped crew Challenger yachts for four months based at Ocean Village.

Southampton City Council leader, Cllr Lorna Fielker said: "It's really positive that the Princess of Wales has said she is feeling well and getting stronger every day. My thoughts are with her, and her family at this time."

Fareham MP, Suella Braverman added in a post on X, formerly Twitter: "On behalf of the people of Fareham, I wish HRH The Princess of Wales a swift recovery as she undergoes treatment for cancer. Sending prayers and love."

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said: “My thoughts are with the Princess of Wales, Prince of Wales, the Royal Family, and in particular her three children at this difficult time.

“The Princess of Wales has the love and support of the whole country as she continues her recovery.

“She has shown tremendous bravery with her statement today.

“In recent weeks she has been subjected to intense scrutiny and has been unfairly treated by certain sections of the media around the world and on social media.

“When it comes to matters of health, like everyone else, she must be afforded the privacy to focus on her treatment and be with her loving family.

“I know I speak for the whole country in wishing her a full and speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her back in action when she's ready.”

Echo reader, Frank Webb commented on Facebook: “May God bless you Kate. Thinking of and praying for you.”

Denise Mayhew added: “A speedy recovery for the Princess of Wales”.
