AN Oswestry birthday girl marked her 99th birthday in style - by sharing a 99 ice cream with her neighbours.

It was 99-year-old Daphne Madden who was scampering to the ice cream van as she celebrated in style on Friday, March 22.

She did share the van with family, friends and neighbours including her young neighbour Sophie Bowd, with whom she enjoyed an ice cream.

Daphne’s daughter Shelagh Watts said that the milestone birthday was celebrated in style.

She said: “Daphne, a long-standing resident of Oswestry, celebrated her 99th birthday with her three daughters, grandchildren, friends, and some of her wonderful neighbours.

“Having lived in Oswestry for more than 70 years after relocating from Ireland with her husband, Doctor Tom Madden.

“Daphne's milestone birthday was a testament to her enduring connection to the community.

“The party included Mimi’s ice cream van providing Flake 99 ice creams and brought together generations to honour Daphne's remarkable life journey.

“Sophie and my mother were the most delighted when the ice cream van drove up to the front door.

“They were the youngest and oldest people at the party.”

In her speech after blowing out the candles on her 99 shaped cake, Daphne said she had never really thought of getting to this great age.

She said: “I recommend eating up and enjoying food as something that has kept me well.”

Shelagh added that she thanked everyone for coming and said it was a most enjoyable day.
