CCTV footage from a Southampton Caribbean restaurant has shown the moment a fight broke out in the kitchen over loose change, resulting in the chef being stabbed.

The footage released by the Crown Prosecution Service shows customer Jaypal Khaira entering the kitchen at Jerk Pan in Commercial Road before being pushed by chef, Austin Whithorne.

Khaira, 33, was convicted of stabbing Whithorne in the inner thigh following a trial at Southampton Crown Court in March.

The incident takes place off camera, though Whithorne can be seen limping back into shot before moving into the front of the restaurant and out the door.

He then phoned police who found and arrested Khaira at a nearby Premiere store.

Khaira was then shown off the premises by the manager of the restaurant, who he is related to, and his father.

As he leaves he picks up another large knife from the kitchen side, though this is quickly taken away from him before he is thrown out.

Khaira, of The Polygon, Southampton told the jury that Whithorne had taken out a knife on him and that he'd been put in a headlock by the chef.

But the prosecution claimed the chef had tried to stop him, restrain him and told him to “calm down” before being stabbed.

Khaira was found guilty of section 18 wounding with intent and was remanded in custody for sentencing on April 25.
