A 34-year-old man has been bailed after a woman was sexually assaulted in Oxford Street on Saturday morning.

Yesterday, Hampshire Constabulary launched an appeal for information about the incident, which allegedly happened between 2am and 4am.

According to police, a 38-year-old woman was on the busy city centre street when she was approached by a man.

After having a conversation, it is alleged he followed her and then sexually assaulted her over her clothes.

The force arrested a 34-year-old man from Southampton on suspicion of sexual assault.

Police have now confirmed that the man has been bailed with conditions until June 30, while officers continue their investigation.

The force is still appealing for residents in the Oxford Street area to get in touch with any information.  

A spokesperson for the police said: “Were you out during the early hours of this morning? Did you see this man and woman in the area of Oxford Street or Terminus Terrace?
