Multiple flood warnings are in place in and around Southampton as high tides are expected to surge.

Spring tides and strong winds are expected to cause flooding tonight and Tuesday morning, according to the Environment Agency.

The River Itchen is expected to flood, with an ‘act now’ warning issued for the estuary.

Affected areas include Woodmill Lane and St Denys, with the river set to burst its banks at Riverside Park.

The Environment Agency said: “Tuesday's early morning tide at 12.30am on April 9 and 2am on April 9 is higher than normal due to unsettled weather with strong Southerly Force Six winds.

“Flood depths in roads and the park will be significant, and water will be fast flowing. After this tide the weather becomes more settled but minor impacts could continue until Thursday.”

Across the pond, flood warnings are currently in place for some coastal and river areas of Beaulieu, Calshot, Hythe, Marchwood, Eling and Redbridge.

In light of the warning, Hampshire County Council said: “After last month’s record rainfall (more than 160 per cent above average) there still are many parts of Hampshire that are experiencing surface flooding and boggy conditions due to high groundwater levels and swollen rivers.

“Please take extra care if you are out and about.

"Our highways teams are on standby 24/7 to respond to any emergency issues, including the clearance of fallen trees and road debris.”
