A wreath has been laid at a memorial to mark 112 years since the ill-fated Titanic sank.

Members of an enthusiasts' group took flowers to the graves of Janet and Brian Ticehurst this weekend and laid a wreath at the Titanic Engineers Memorial in East Park, Southampton.

Branded "unsinkable", RMS Titanic sank during the early hours of April 15, 1912, in the North Atlantic after sideswiping an iceberg on her maiden voyage.

The tragedy claimed the lives of 549 people from Southampton, and every city street and person was affected in some way.

Ian Anthony-Huntly, from the enthusiasts' group, said: "A group of enthusiasts met up at the DoubleTree Hilton at Chilcot this weekend to commemorate the loss of the Titanic 112 years ago.

"They got together on Friday afternoon to remember previous conventions and renew friendships."

He added: "After the evening meal they had a visual presentation showing conventions over the years.

"Following this they saw a video of the Titanic whistles which have been recovered from the wreck, renovated and finally blown again after many years underwater."

The gathering comes as relatives of those lost on the ship still live in the city.

Ian added: "We are sad that Southampton does not commemorate this
event."
