The Southampton Tourist Guides Association are on the hunt for a new cohort of guides, and are offering specialist training.

Founded in 1976, the association teaches participants about Southampton's rich history through a series of lectures and visits to notable sites such as the SeaCity Museum and the Tudor House and Garden.

Prospective guides will embark on training walks around the old town to discover historical landmarks.

The city's vintage wine vaults, some dating back centuries, are also on the itinerary.

The course is ready to run for roughly three months.

The guides currently operate weekend strolls, starting at the Bargate.

This is a paid part-time role, with wages based on tour attendance.

Graduates from the training program will be able to conduct these tours and depending upon interests, they can further expand their repertoire to include themed walking tours revolving around the Titanic, the Mayflower or Jane Austen.

A spokesperson for the group said: "As tour guides, we aim to entertain and educate visitors and locals alike.

"I think we would all say, the most common phrase you as a Tour Guide will hear is:’ well, I never knew that!’ followed by how much someone enjoyed a tour and how interesting they found it. This makes the work of a guide incredibly rewarding.

"We are proud that the Lord Mayor of Southampton is our patron and that 2026 will mark the 50th anniversary of our organisation."

An open evening for people eager to learn more will be taking place on April 26, at 6.30pm at the chapel in Southampton's Old Cemetery, with parking available on Cemetery Road.
