A cloud of smoke was seen billowing near a warehouse in Southampton earlier today.

Firefighters were called to the “small fire” at the former CedarGroup warehouse on Royal Crescent Road.

Crews rushed to the scene while Hampshire Police closed off the road.

Here is what we know so far:

Firefighters faced a pile of rubbish fully lit at the back of the property when they arrived at around 4.30pm.

Crews tackled the small fire and checked inside the warehouse to see if the fire had spread.

There were no injuries and firefighters confirmed no investigation would be launched.

Green watch from St Mary’s fire station attended the blaze, along with crews from Hightown, Redbridge and St Mary’s.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Reports of a fire on the site of a disused warehouse off Saltmarsh Road were received by our control room at just after 4.30pm this afternoon (April 22).

“Crews from Hightown, Redbridge and St Mary’s attended the incident.

“One main jet was used and the fire was contained to a single-storey outbuilding at the rear of the property.

“One fire engine currently remains on site to damp down.”

A Solent University student, who lives on the block opposite, said: “I’ve heard from security that kids used to come here and mess around as the building looks like it’s abandoned. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what it was.”
