A Southampton dad has raised over £4,000 after running the London Marathon.

Anthony Patten, who recently had successful major cancer surgery, completed the 26.2 miles challenge last weekend.

The 52-year-old described it as “quite simply a privilege” to run for the noble cause and raise valuable funds for, Young Lives vs Cancer.

He raised raise £4,145.

He said: "Having recently undergone successful major cancer surgery I have seen firsthand the effect this horrible disease can have on families.

“My personal story simply doesn’t compare to the devastation of this happening to a child or a young person and to the families around them.

“So many of those affected are in need of the support Young Lives v Cancer can offer and I consider myself very lucky to be in a position just to do my little bit.”

“To be honest I’ve never really enjoyed running so it’s been a challenge from day one but it pails into insignificance when you stop and think what I’m actually doing it for.

“The thought of the strength and resilience I see in the children and young people living with cancer was the inspiration I needed to drag myself around the 26.2 miles.

"This coupled with the tireless work this charity does for children and their families who suffer with this terrible disease on a daily basis gives me that added push.”

Every day, 12 more children and young people in the UK will hear the devastating news that they have cancer.

Sophie Hartley, Mass Participation Events Manager at Young Lives vs Cancer, said: “We can’t thank Anthony enough for his amazing efforts, taking on the challenge of a lifetime for Young Lives vs Cancer.

"For every blister Anthony has encountered and all the running and training he has done, we are in awe of his dedication and determination.

“We’d love to see the community get behind a final push for Anthony’s fundraising.
