Police have arrested a 36-year-old man after a pensioner was almost scammed out of £5,000.

Officers in Fareham were called to a bank after staff believed an elderly man may have been the victim of a rogue trader.

Taking to Facebook, an officer said: “We attended a report of an elderly gentleman at the bank.

“The bank had reported they believed him to be the victim of rogue traders. He had been asked to pay £5,000 for a repair to a three-foot piece of roof.

“After taking details, the male was very worried that the rogue traders would come back to take the money from him.”

The officers accompanied the elderly gentleman back to his address, where a man was found to be waiting for him

They added: “We accompanied him back to the address, where we found one of the suspects on the driveway attempting to ask for payment.

“One male in handcuffs, arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation.”

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: “We were called at 11.37pm to a report of a potential fraud.

“Officers attended an address in Neville Avenue and arrested a 31-year-old man from Havant on suspicion of fraud by false representation.

“He has been released on bail until 29 July.”
