An outbreak of norovirus has been reported on a cruise ship set to sail into Southampton today.

A number of passengers on board P&O Ventura reported being infected with the virus, also known as the winter vomiting bug.

The cruise ship sailed from Amsterdam and it arrived in Southampton this morning.

According to the NHS website, the main symptoms of norovirus are nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting.

Those infected may also have a high temperature, a headache and aching arms and legs.

The Echo understands that some passengers who reported feeling sick have been urged to stay in their cabins and guests enjoying the buffet are no longer being allowed to serve themselves.

A spokesperson for P&O Cruises confirmed the outbreak and said it has kicked in sanitation protocols to uphold everyone's safety onboard.

The spokesperson said: "Ensuring the health and wellbeing of all guests and crew is our absolute priority.

"Following a report of a small number of guests with gastrointestinal symptoms, we swiftly implemented enhanced sanitisation protocols to uphold the welfare of everyone onboard.

"We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of our guests to maintain these hygiene procedures, as we continue to prioritise their comfort and safety throughout their holiday with us."
