A town centre building remains covered in scaffolding as workers remove potentially deadly cladding.

The sight of the Paramount building which houses a now-closed former Kiss Gym and a number of flats being wrapped up in scaffolding as been a familiar one for visitors to Swindon town centre in recent months.

Work to take the flammable cladding off the building started earlier this year, more than six years after the Grenfell disaster promoted safety recommendations.

Permission was granted in 2022 to remove the cladding on the Paramount Building on Princess Street in Swindon, but changes to the colour of the replacement cladding meant that the council had to give new permission, which happened in January.

A council spokesperson said: "The previously-agreed colour finish has been discontinued and the proposed new cladding would result in the removal of the cedar cladding and replacement [using] a new walnut brown colour which is the closest possible match."

The report continues saying the building has external walls that include "a large portion of combustible materials" and the consequences of a fire has the "potential to be significant".

The work to remove the cladding was expected to take place over the next few months.
