A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued for much of the South Coast of England, including Southampton.

The warning from the Met Office started at 8am and is set to last throughout most of the day until 7pm.

In a statement, the forecaster said: "Scattered showers and thunderstorms may lead to some disruption."

  • 1pm - 15C, heavy shower (60% chance of precipitation)
  • 2pm - 14C, heavy rain (80% chance of precipitation)
  • 3pm - 14C, heavy rain (90% chance of precipitation)
  • 4pm - 14C, light rain (50% chance of precipitation)
  • 5pm - 15C, cloudy (10% chance of precipitation)
  • 6pm - 15C, cloudy (10% chance of precipitation)
  • 7pm - 15C, light rain (50% chance of precipitation)

What to expect with a yellow weather warning

In terms of what to expect with the current yellow warning, the Met Office says there could be:

  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

In a statement, the forecaster added: "While many places will remain dry, scattered showers are expected through Wednesday.

"Where these develop they are likely to be heavy at times, with a risk of hail and thunder.

"A few places may see 10-20mm in 1hr and perhaps 30-40mm in 2-3 hours."
