New Forest District Council is revamping St George's Hall in Calshot in a bid to make it more useful for the community.

The works will involve a transformation of the interior, with structural changes, upgraded acoustic flooring, a redesigned kitchen and state-of-the-art cinema facilities among the enhancements in store for the building.

The hall, which was constructed in the 1910s, served as an RAF chapel for one of Britain's crucial military airfields. In recent years, having metamorphosed into a community nerve centre, it accommodates a youth club, a community garden project, and a Community Hub replete with food larder collection.

As part of this refurbishment, both the exterior and interior of the building will be renovated, with particular attention to preserving the original structure, including the Chaplain’s room with its exquisite stained-glass windows.

Energy efficiency is a pivotal focus of the upgrades, with the implementation of an air source heat pump for heating and hot water. Additional insulation coupled with photo-voltaic panels will boost the energy conservation rating from an F to a more favourable B rating.

The surrounding space will not be overlooked, with improvements on the horizon for outdoor facilities and safety measures for the car park. A community garden will be introduced, featuring fruit trees and enhanced accessibility for individuals with mobility issues.

A skate ramp, versatile shelter, goalposts and a basketball net will also be installed.

St George's Hall will be closed during the refurbishment period, however, the food larder will continue to operate from the location's car park or alternatively, the NFDC's car park at the beach approach.

Councillor Dan Poole, NFDC’s portfolio holder for community, safety, and wellbeing, said: "St George’s Hall is a local asset which has a strong identity within the community here. It is the only community facility in the village and is very much valued.

"With a long and important local history, the hall is now in need of this refurbishment so it can serve as an improved and modern hub for Calshot, offering a venue for various events, including cookery classes and film nights."

The hall is set to open its doors anew in September 2024.
