A fire broke out at a block of flats above a shop, with its cause now under investigation.

Crews from St Mary’s and Redbridge were called to Cavell Place on Saturday morning after smoke was seen billowing from the roof of the property.

The fire involved panels on the roof, but firefighters remain unclear as to how it started.

Speaking at the scene of the fire in Weston, group manager at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Service, Alex Rhodes said: "The fire started on the roof of the building and has not spread to any of the flats.

"We are not aware of any injuries and everyone at the scene is currently safe.

"The fire involved the panels on the roof but currently we are unclear as to how it started and are continuing our investigation work."

A passer-by was one of the first to stop at the scene as the incident unfolded.

Steve Travers, 31, was driving on Barnfield Road when he spotted a large plume of smoke.

Mr Travers, who lives in Weston, said: “I saw the smoke coming from the roof of the flats.

“I stopped my van, and it started to get bigger. I pulled over and called 999.

“I then pulled up at the black of the block and entered the back door.

“People in the flats did seem like they didn't quite believe us when we knocked on their doors.

“As we left the building the fire service arrived. It was just natural reaction to just get in the building and get people to safety.

“The smoke did look scary as it billowed from the building.”

The blaze prompted a large emergency response, with several fire engines and ambulances called to the scene.

Weston Lane was closed while the incident was dealt with and reopened at midday.

A spokesperson from the fire service said: “Crews from St Mary’s and Redbridge were in attendance at an incident in Cavell Place Southampton.

“The fire, which is now out, affected the roof of a block of flats.

“The initial call came in just before 10.30am on Saturday morning.”
