A driver accused of killing a woman in a crash was speeding, a court has been told.
Martin Hayward, 54, was driving on Bitterne Road West when he collided with Clare Munn.
He has denied death by careless driving.
Ms Munn, 45, suffered “catastrophic and not survivable” injuries and died at the scene on May 2, 2022, Southampton Magistrates’ Court heard.
Prosecuting, Rhys Evans said: “The defendant was driving towards Southampton on Bitterne Road West at around 10.08pm.
“The road has a speed limit of 30mph, but witnesses say he was going quicker.
“It is the crown’s case that he was speeding between 50 and 55mph on that stretch of road and he collided with Ms Munn.
“He stopped at the scene and waited for police to arrive."
Oliver O’Connor, representing Hayward, said he denies the charge put against him and he “had no time to stop”.
Hayward, of Anson Drive, Southampton, pleaded not guilty to causing death by careless driving.
He will next appear at Southampton Crown Court on April 1.
Tributes were left at the scene of the crash in the following days.
In one tribute, Julie Newman said: “Very sad news thoughts are with her family."
