Work has started at the Southampton Outdoor Sports Centre in a bid to put the city “on the map”.

Construction workers, councillors, stakeholders, and an MP gathered to celebrate the start of building work.

The £36 million project has got underway with the sports centre set to be revamped into a state-of-the-art facility with new netball and tennis courts, changing rooms, café, and community hub.

Speaking at a ground-breaking ceremony which saw a ceremonial spade thrust into the dirt, Southampton Test MP Satvir Kaur, said the redevelopment help sport enthusiasts realise their full potential.

She said: “This is a once in a generation opportunity.

“We all know in Southampton there are huge health inequalities, and places like this are important to make sure all children have access to sport.

“This will put Southampton on the map, it’s such a great place.

“I hope this redevelopment does bring people to our city and we do finally recognise other people’s talent.

“I started to come to the outdoor sports centre as a child, I’m an inner-city kid that grew up on free school meals, I barely had a garden and we didn’t have much of a playground, let alone a green space, so coming here and having access to sports is so important.”

The redevelopment of Southampton’s Outdoor Sports Centre is being led by Chandler’s Ford based construction company Morgan Sindall and funded through the Levelling Up Fund, Southampton City Council, and the Football Foundation.

Cliff Kinch, regional director at Morgan Sindall, said: “I’m personally really proud to be here at the start of a new project, a catalyst for a new sports provision and a real transformation for the city.

“As local people we have a keen interest in this project and what it means to so many, future generations, and the impact it will have growing a healthier community.

“We can’t wait to see what this facility looks like in 18-months’ time, for the whole city to enjoy.”

Cllr Toqeer Kataria, cabinet member for compliance and leisure, planted a ceremonial spade into the ground to mark the start of construction at the site.

He added: “This is one of the most ambitious and exciting leisure projects in Southampton in recent times.

“This project is also a key opportunity to tackle inequalities in health and well-being by creating welcoming spaces for everyone to get involved, get moving, and get connected, helping to improve both physical and mental health.”
