The Southampton City Council team also saved more than £3.4 million over the past year through its investigations, which led to 15 properties being returned to the council.

Helen Prophett, district housing officer at Southampton City Council, said: "Recovery of these vital council homes owes a lot to many honest residents and leaseholders throughout the city.

"Tip-offs and reports are one of the most effective ways to help the council combat tenancy fraud.

"The council will always be proactive in investigating these reports to ensure homes are going to those who are most in need."

Since September 2020, a total of 101 properties have been recovered, freeing up housing for families in need.

Andy Frampton, councillor responsible for housing at Southampton City Council, said: "It is therefore extremely welcome that we have taken this action to free up these much needed properties."
