Shoppers have saved millions by making more sustainable choices at the checkout.

In Southampton alone, Company Shop members saved £6,500,278 on their groceries over the past year, thanks to discounted surplus products that would have gone to waste.

2,247 tonnes of waste were saved, the equivalent of 5,349,583 meals.

Chris Burns, group managing director of Company Shop Group, said: "Each year, the UK produces around 10.7 million tonnes of food waste, presenting a potentially catastrophic threat to our planet, contributing significantly to carbon emissions and the unnecessary use of natural resources.

"Our purpose has always been clear, to stop surplus becoming waste by creating an effective and easy solution for the industry to redistribute surplus, at scale.

"Every product saved from waste represents not just an environmental win, but a practical demonstration that surplus can be managed differently and I am immensely proud of what Company Shop Group continues to achieve - not only this year, but over more than five decades of pioneering work to tackle food loss and waste."

Company Shop Group is the UK's leading redistributor and retailer of surplus products.

Its latest annual Impact Report celebrates a major milestone – the redistribution of one billion surplus items since the company began.

Over the past year, 47,000 tonnes of food and drink have been redistributed across the UK, equating to 117 million individual units.

This effort has prevented 121,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Nationally, members saved a total of £137 million on their shopping.

By working with more than 800 retailers, manufacturers, and brands, the group helps partners meet sustainability targets and reduce waste through a circular economy approach.

Mr Burns said the past year had been “hugely successful” and thanked all partners and colleagues.

He said: "I want to thank all of our partners and our amazing colleagues who have help deliver such positive impact."

Company Shop’s network includes ‘Surplus Supermarkets’ and its social enterprise, Community Shop.

Both provide affordable groceries while helping communities, supporting businesses, and reducing the environmental impact of waste.
