Red Funnel ferry helps with dinghy rescue in the Solent

A Red Funnel ferry has assisted with a rescue operation in the Solent this afternoon.

Red Funnel's Red Osprey vessel was alerted to a capsized dinghy on its return journey from Southampton to East Cowes.

The boat, full of passengers, pulled up alongside the capsized vessel to assist.

An announcement over the tannoy said: "We are assisting with a capsized dinghy.

"We ask you all to remain seated as you may find a bit of movement on the vessel while we hold still."

Hamble Lifeboat was also on hand to help.

It is understood one person was safely recovered and taken to shore by lifeboat.

Red Funnel's ferry has now started its journey back to East Cowes.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: "At 3.20pm today, HM Coastguard was made aware of a capsized dinghy with one person on board in the Solent.

"Hamble Lifeboat was sent and the person and dinghy were rescued and taken to shore."
