A 15-mile charity walk is set to take place to raise funds and awareness for hospice care.

The Mighty Mountbatten Hike will run from Southampton to Winchester in support of Mountbatten Hampshire, a hospice charity providing 24-hour care across the region.

It will be held on July 26, and aims to honour the memory of Gillian, a long-time Saints supporter who attended ICON Sports Coaching, and died under the care of the hospice.

Wayne Taylor, who is leading the hike, said: "I’m really excited for this 15-mile challenge in aid of Mountbatten Hampshire.

"I’ve never walked or jogged this far before, but it’s for a great cause.

"Please donate if you can, and give us a beep if you see us along the way."

The event, named Wayne’s Walk, will be led by Eastleigh-based ICON Sports Coaching and will begin at 9.30am on Crosshouse Lane.

The team hopes to arrive at their final destination, Mountbatten’s Winchester shop on Jewry Lane, at 3pm.

The route will pass by St Mary’s Stadium, alongside the River Itchen, and take in Winchester Cathedral along the way.

Sam Phillips of ICON Sports Coaching said: "I’m really proud to be supporting the legend that is Wayne with Wayne’s Walk: A Mighty Mountbatten Hike.

"He came up with the idea of taking on a physical challenge himself, in honour of his friend, Gilly.

"We’re hoping to raise awareness of the new Mountbatten Hampshire charity shop in Winchester — we’re just taking the long way there.

"We would love you to join us, too, for all or part of this walk, as we try to raise vital funds for Mountbatten Hampshire’s hospice care."

The team from ICON has completed previous physical challenges in Gillian’s memory as part of #TeamGilly, including a run from AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium to St Mary’s Stadium and the Jurassic Coast 100km Continuous Challenge.

Mountbatten Hampshire delivers 85 per cent of its care services directly in people’s homes, covering Southampton and large parts of the county.

Other services are provided at its inpatient unit in West End and day services at the Frances Sheldon Centre.
