Controversial plans to build 200 homes on farmland have been given the go-ahead despite strong backlash.

Members of the New Forest District Council (NFDC) planning committee have approved transforming the 60-acre site at Lynwood Farm at Rollestone Road in Holbury.

The two existing bungalows on the site will be demolished to make way for the new houses, which will include 70 affordable homes.

The proposals from Wates have been criticised by hundreds of residents throughout the application process.

Josh Bond, assistant clerk at Fawley Parish Council, was among those who attended the meeting today to make a formal objection.

He said: “This is a matter of judgment, and it is your judgement that matters most.

“The plans are for 200 homes on land that is not allocated in the local [housing] plan, and is wholly disproportionate for a village like Holbury.

“The adverse impacts are real and significant.”

A representative from the NHS also spoke at the meeting, telling members that GP surgeries in the area cannot cope with this level of infrastructure during a time when they are already struggling.

Meanwhile, Holbury resident Justin Packman questioned how a 200-home development can “further the New Forest’s beauty and quality”.

During the debate on Wednesday, Liberal Democrat Cllr Malcolm Wade said there are “too many variables”.

He also raised concerns about the impact on existing infrastructure, including schools and GP surgeries.

“Getting a doctor’s appointment in the Waterside is like winning the lottery,” the councillor for Dibden said.

“These applications are coming in because we need the housing, and I get that, but we have not got the infrastructure.

“We should think about this very, very carefully. I will not be supporting the plans.”

Cllr David Hawkins, Conservative for Milford and Hordle, said he loves the proposed houses but “common sense has gone out the window.”

But Cllr John Sleep, Conservative for Totton South, urged members to support the plans.

He said: “There is plenty of space and a good balance.

“The government is demanding more and more houses, so if the plans go out, it will come back as another plan that will cover every square inch of land.”

A spokesperson from Wates said they have received over 30 letters of support, and the proposals are backed by planning officers at the council.

Nine councillors voted for the plans, while two voted against.
